Book Review: There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins

Hey Guys!

Halloween is getting closer and closer so that means that it is time for yet another spooky review. today it is the turn of a book that I was actually hoping to read last Halloween but never got to, and that is There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins. So, without further ado, here is my review.

Am I destined to be disappointed by my Halloween reads this year?!?!? Yet again this book g=felt very, meh. it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. I can 100% see why this book was divided people so dramatically!

I went into this book knowing that it had very, very mixed reviews, but with assurances from my sister that it is a fantastic book. so I had very missed expectations of it. part of me thought that it could be brilliant, part of me thought that it might be awful. In the end it landed smack bang in the middle. In the meh zone. I think that my main issue with this book is that it is far to romance heavy. that ended up being the only real plot, not the slashed/murder mystery story that it was meant to be. Which was really disappointing if I am honest. I wanted blood, I wanted gore, I wanted, and was promised, horror. And this book just didn’t deliver. And it is a shame. Especially considering the little bits of the slasher story that we did get to see where brilliant. it was dark and twisted and graphically gruesome. I loved those parts. They were the slasher story that I was expecting! It is just a shame that those moments were few and far between. I just wish that ore time was dedicated to that story, as opposed to the romance.

If we completely ignore the fact that this book is meant to be a horror/slasher-fic, and just look at it as a romance, it was a sweet story. Stephanie Perkins is very good at romances. I found myself really rooting for Makani and Olli. I wanted everything to work out for them. they were a very sweet couple, but, that wasn’t what I wanted from this book.

My other issue with this book was that even when we did have the gory, slasher moments, they were underdeveloped. They needed more work. There were so many times throughout this book when I was left underwhelmed. For instance, I felt like the Killers motives could have been explored a lot more. also, I feel like it would have been really good/creepy if we had explored their emotions more. maybe get to experience their feelings when they were preparing for the murder, during the murder and even after it. it would have been dark as hell, but it would have really added to the horror of this book. there were many moments that felt underdeveloped and like the author had missed an opportunity. With a little bit more work this book could have been brilliant. it could have been horrifying.

All in all, it is an okay book. It was dark and twisted and disturbingly graphic at times, but for the most part it was just a standard romance with a bit of gore. I feel slightly cheated as this book was not what it said that it would be (at least in my opinion)

star 2.52.5 out of 5
