I currently have ‘The Monster Mash’ stuck in my head, so that can only mean one thing, that it is time for another spooky review. today it is the turn of Doll Bones by Holly Black, so, let’s do this!
Oh, I’m disappointed. I really wanted to love this book, I really did. I had such high hopes for it and it really didn’t live up to them. it just fell completely flat.
I was honestly so disappointed by this book. it had so much potential. I was fully expecting this book to be incredibly spooky and twisted, I was assuming that it would be a bit like Frozen Charlotte by Alex Bell, but it wasn’t. It wasn’t at all creepy. It wasn’t at all spooky. Which, frankly, sucked as it really could have been! It had the groundwork for it, but Black just seemed to fail at building upon it. it meant that this book just ended up feeling pretty mediocre adventure story instead of the spooky book that it was being sold as! I found myself constantly waiting for something to happen, and it never did. there were maybe three moments in this whole book that were slightly creepy, but that was it. and it isn’t just because I am an adult reading a middlegrade. The spooky wasn’t there.
I will say, that at least this book was mildly realistic with its reactions to three 12 year olds travelling alone. The way that the public reacted was at least pretty accurate to what would happen in the real life. so many middlegrade show preteens travelling across the country unsupervised for weeks without anyone blinking an eye or questioning it. at least this book showed that side of the story. I just wish that it had done the rest of the story as well.
And that is all I have to say on this book. it was very ‘meh’. A bit of a nothing book If I am completely honest. I love Holly Black, but I didn’t love this book
