It is once again time for another book review. this week it is the turn of a book that I have wanted to read for a few years now and that book is The Song Of Achilles by Madeline Miller. So, let’s do this!
Why did I wait so long to read this book? it is incredible! It is hands down, one of the best books that I have read in ages. An instant favourite. I just couldn’t put it down. Why have I not read it before now?!? I loved it!
This is such a brilliant story. it did what books based on mythology and the ancient world often struggle to do, and that was perfectly blend the old with the new. The fact with the fiction. Miller managed to seamlessly blend the story of Achilles, that we all know and love, into a new and exciting story of love and friendship. It was just done so perfectly. She breathed new life into a classic story and I love her for it. she managed to stay really true to the story of Achilles and retold it so well. I love the fact that she chose to explore Patroclus so deeply in this book. mythology tends to skim over him a little bit and so it was so nice to get a whole story about him and his relationship with Achilles.
I also really love the fact that Miller decided to explore the sexuality of the boys. It is such a debated topic throughout history as to whether Achilles and Patroclus were lovers or not. I loved that she decided to explore and embrace that angle. And I think in general she explored sexuality perfectly in this book. she showed the boys nervousness about their feelings, she showed them trying to deny it and eventually embracing it. But she also showed them experimenting. Not just with each other but with a girl as well. It was just really refreshing to see a book that did this and didn’t have it the other way around (hetro experimenting with homo). And I do have to say that just generally, I adored Patroclus and Achilles together. Their relationship was just so lovely to read. Their connection and commitment to each other was just beautiful. I loved seeing how they interacted and conversed. Their relationship in this book felt so genuine and real. It was one of those books where I found myself really rooting for their relationship and wanting everything to be alright for them.
All in all, I really loved this book. It was so beautifully written and the story was perfect. I am so very happy that I have finally read it. if you have any interest in the ancient world, you should 100% read this book!
