Somehow we are already halfway through the year. I’ve no idea how that it’s possible, but somehow we are. So today I thought it was about time for me to make a post talking about my top five books of the year so far. I did this last year and I really like being able to look back at it and remember how I felt about those books in the moment. So, here we go!
High Rise JG Ballard
This was a wholly unexpected book for me. I picked it up on complete whim and just fell in love with it. It’s such a complex story with so much going on. this book delves into the human psyche and explores what would happen to humanity without the confined of society and its norms. It is a truly wonderful book. It is dark and gritty and so much more than I was expecting. I read it in a single sitting, I couldn’t put it down. Also, the audiobook is read by the Incredible Tom Hiddleston, which just makes it even better
This Is Going To Hurt by Adam Kay
This is another book that i picked up on a whim and ended up completely loving. Generally speaking, I don’t read non-fiction books, but I picked this one up after hearing nothing but good things about it. This book is the true diary of a junior doctor working for the NHS and it is brilliant. It is hilarious and heart-breaking in equal measures. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much should at a book of cried as much. it has giving me such a deep appreciation and admiration for everyone who works for the NHS. It is one of those books that everyone should read. It’s bloody brilliant!
The Wicked King by Holly black
This is one of the best sequels that I’ve read in a very long time. I would actually say that I enjoyed it more than I did for first book, it is that good! It really expands upon the story starting in the Cruel Prince and made it so much more complex. Countless schemes all overlapping each other, romance, murder, and it just beautiful writing it is just incredible. I loved every single second of this book and I cannot wait for third book
Cinder by Marissa Meyer
This is one of those books that I have been meaning to read for literally years but I’ve just never managed to get around to picking up. Until now. I can definitely see why so many people adore this series, it is brilliant! There’s so much drama mystery in it. Ive already read the second book and I cannot wait to see what is going to happen in the next book. the story follows teenagers cinder, a mechanic in new Beijing, as she starts to discover who she truly is and where she came from, all while trying to keep her secrets. This book was just so damn good. if you haven’t read the Lunar Chronicles yet, you need to!
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
This is a very recent addition to this list. I had never had any intention of reading this book but after binge watching the whole of the new TV adaptation and completely falling in love with it I knew that I needed to read the book. and my god did I love it! this is such an utterly unique story, it is unlike anything that I have ever read before or will ever read again. I can 100% see why so many people have loved it for such a long time. It is an incredible book that you all need to read!
And there we have it. those are my top 5 books of the year so far. I have been really lucky to have read some absolutely fantastic books so far this year, and I am really looking forward to reading more in the second half of the year. What has been your top read of 2019 so far? Any books that you can recommend for me? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon
