Book Review: White Cat by Holly Black

Hey Guys!

Its Saturday and that means that it is book review time! This week it is the turn of a back list title that I have been interested in reading for a very long time and that book is White Cat by Holly Black. Let’s do this!

I don’t know how I feel about this book. I really don’t. I picked it up fully expecting to love it, as I have with every book by Holly that I have read so far, and I didn’t. I didn’t hate it, but I’m not sure that I liked it either…..

There were two big things that made me dislike this book, the first is that it was hard to follow and the second was that it was predictable. This book is incredibly confusing. Particularly for the first 100 pages or so. I just didn’t feel like things were being explained very well. There was a lot of different things happening and not a lot of explanations given. It made it incredibly hard to follow what was happening. I still don’t have a firm grasp on which character is which, because of how difficult I found it to follow. But somehow at the same time, it was very predictable. I figured out all of the major plot twists very early on. Nothing that happened was particularly shocking or unexpected. You just knew that it was going to happen.

On the plus side, I didn’t mind the characters. like I said before, I did have a few issues keeping some of the secondary characters straight (mainly the brothers but also some of the other characters). But on the whole, I didn’t mind the main character. I did find him a bit irritating at times, but for the most part, I did like him. I liked that he wasn’t scared to embrace his nature as a con-man. I also didn’t mind Lila. I am kind of intrigued to see what is going to happen to her throughout the trilogy, although I wasn’t a big fan of the event at the end of the book involving her. I feel like it was a bit of a sell-out.

All in all, I have mixed feelings. This is my least favourite of the books by Holly that I have read. I will probably pick up the sequel at some point. I am hoping that now the story is established it won’t be as confusing
