Book Review: Mary Poppins by P.L Travers

Hey Guys!

Another week has been and gone and that means that it is time for another book review. this week it is the turn of a children’s classic that I have been meaning t read for literally years. And that book is Mary Poppins by P.L Travers. Let’s do this!

I actually really enjoyed this book. much more then I was ever expecting too. Like so many others, I grew up watching the film adaptation, and so I obviously knew the basic story of this book when I picked it up. But I was completely taken by surprise by how much the film left out!

I honestly wasn’t expecting to be as drawn into this book as I was. I loved how it perfectly blended the contemporary and the magical, all the while blurring the lines between what is real and what it is not. The whole time that I was reading it I just couldn’t wait for their next adventure. For the next spark of magic. It really drew me in and kept me hooked to the story. I was particularly surprised by the many magical experiences in the book that had been left out of the book. I loved that there were so many elements of the story that I didn’t know.

I also really liked Mary Poppins as a character. In the film I have always found her a bit too sweet and sickly. I loved seeing this harsher side of her. The side that wasn’t afraid to tell the children off, who didn’t take any nonsense and who never confirmed if the weird events that took place where truly real or not. I also loved the Bert was in it. I had honestly always assumed that he was just an invention by Disney. I was so happy that he was there and that there was a hint of a romance between him and Mary.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I am so glad that I have finally read it and I can 100% see why so many people around the world adore it. it is such a lovey story.
