Book Review: This Is Going To Hurt by Adam Kay

Hey Guys!

It is Saturday and that means that it is time for another book review. This week’s book is from a genre that I basically, never, read, and that it non-fiction. So, here is my review for This Is Going To Hurt by Adam Kay.

Generally speaking, I don’t read non-fiction. It just isn’t a genre that particularly appeals to me. On the very, very, rare occasion that I do pick up something non-fiction, it has to be something that really, really interests me, or I won’t read it. I never intended to read This Is Going To Hurt. It wasn’t really this book by customers literally dozens of times, so I caved and brought it and a few days ago I picked it up on a whim and I honestly could not put it down!

This book is truly something special. It is so incredibly honest and true in its depiction of the NHS. It is just so canid and eye opening about the reality of working for the NHS. Doctors in England get so much grief from the general public and the government. They are one of the most underappreciated groups in the country, and this book completely proves that. it shows you exactly what it is like and what is expected of junior doctors. I know I couldn’t do it. I suddenly have so much more respect for the people who work for the NHS. I never really thought about the consequence of the job, both mental and physical, until now.

But what I loved abbot this book, besides how eye opening it is, was just how funny it is. It is equal parts hilarious and heart-breaking. There were several times while reading it that I had to physically put the book down because I was laughing so hard. The sheer stupidity of humanity will never fail to amuse me. Some of the things Adam Kay experienced while working as a doctor are just mind boggling (the good and the bad). But while being laugh out loud funny, it is also incredibly sad at times. It truly hurt to read at points. While reading this book I cried 4 times, and only one of them was in laughter. It was just so unbelievably hard hitting at times.

This is one of those books that everyone should read. no matter what your opinion is on non-fiction or the NHS. You need to read this book. it will truly open your eyes to the realities of the job. It will also make you laugh so hard you cry…
