Book Review: The Wicked King by Holly Black

Hey Guys!

This book was one of my most highly anticipated releases of 2019 and I was not disappointed by it. I would actually wager that I enjoyed it more than I did the first book!

This book was just so much darker, and I wasn’t entirely sure that that was possible! I felt like there was just so much more going on it. scheming on top of scheming. With the schemers all trying to out scheme each other! It was fascinating to watch all these different schemes from different people all slowly being revealed and unravelled. It made for an incredibly interesting read. I never knew who was going to come out on top! There was just so much betrayal and deceit in this book! I loved it!

I also just really loved the storyline in general. I wasn’t sure what direction this book was going to take. The Cruel Prince left of in a way that somehow left it open to any possibility but also wrapping up its storylines nicely. And so I honestly didn’t know what would happen in this book. I think that it did a fantastic job at reopening the storylines form the first book and developing while also weaving in new, and even better storylines. For instance, Lady Asha. I have so many questions about her and what role she will play. Her addition to the story, despite her only having a very small role in this book, has blown the story wide open and left it open for any possibility. I honestly cannot wait for the next book in this series, just so that I can see where this story is going to go next! I am also very glad that I read the novella before reading this book as it really helped me to understand Taryn and her motives a bit better.

I will admit that like the first book, this one could be a bit slow paced at times. Personally, I don’t mind that too much, but I know that some people hate that. and, also similarly to the first book, compared to the slow nature of the book, the ending felt a bit rushed. So much happened in the last 4 or 5 chapters of this book that, at times, it was almost hard to keep up with what was happening. I personally would have liked to see the final chapters spread out a bit more. if they had each been a little bit longer and explored the topic a bit more deeply, it would have taken this book up another level!

But all in all, I really enjoy this book. it was everything I hoped that it would be and more! I loved all the little references to The Darkest Part Of The Forest, and how the characters have progressed, and just all of it. if you haven’t read these books yet, you need to!

star 4.54.5 out of 5

And there we have it. what do you think of The Cruel Prince? If The Wicked King a good sequel? I think so. I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon
