Book Review: The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg

Hey Guys!

It’s day 15! We are only 10 days away now! I can’t believe that we are already so far into December! It doesn’t seem possible! Anywho, it is time for another festive book review. this time it is the turn of The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. Let’s do this!

I don’t think that I ever read The Polar Express growing up. at least, not that I can remember. And I’ve never watched the film either. I’ve seen parts of it, but never the whole thing. This meant that I had a general idea as to what the story is about but I didn’t know the details so I thought that it was about time that I finally read it!

I don’t really read picture books, they just aren’t really something that I ever find myself reaching for, but I thought that I would make an exception for this classic. And I have got to admit that I did really like the illustrations in this book. they were incredibly beautiful and definitely helped to bring the story to life. although I do have to admit that the illustrations were probably the best part of this book. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the actual story.

I mean it wasn’t bad. Not by any means! I can see why this book has stood the test of time. It is an incredibly unique and unusual Christmas story. I’ve never read anything quite like it. I was just left wanting a bit more from it. I can’t quiet put my finger on what I found lacking about this story, there was just something missing for me. I wanted more.

I also didn’t find this story particularly festive. I mean, obviously, it’s set at Christmas and themed around it and all that, but I just found that it wasn’t that festive. It just didn’t have a particularly magical feel to it. for me at least. It left something to be desired. I wanted a bit more. more magic, ore Christmas, more festivity!

Overall, this is an enjoyable story and I am sure that if I had read it as a child, I would have loved it. just as an adult, it left me wanting more.
