Book Review: The Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke

Hey Guys!

Another week has been and gone, and that means that it is time for another book review! this week it is for another new release book. and that book is The Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke. Let’s do this!

This book was kind of weird and I am not 100% sure how I feel about it….I really enjoyed some elements of the story such as all the girl power elements but then I found other parts of the story to be rushed and underdeveloped….

I think over all the issue that I had with this book was that it did quiet work as a standalone story. it needed to either be a much larger book or a duology. There was just so much crammed into this book, and so many different storylines all shoved together that everything ended up feeling a little bit underdeveloped. In fact, it ended up being quiet confusing at times. There was just too much. between magic and giants, strange sicknesses and witches. It was a lot. There needed to be more book to accommodate that much story. I have been left with far too many unanswered questions and I am so confused about this world.

I also found that this impacted on how much I felt for the characters. I found it really hard to remember who was who. And I ended up not really feeling any connection to the characters as individuals. I found it really difficult to form any bond with them as we don’t really get enough time with any of them to truly form that connection with them. by the end of this book I really didn’t care who lived and who died. I just felt nothing towards them, which really sucked. This book had the potential to make me fall in love and want to protect these characters at all cost, but I ended up not feeling a thing towards them. I just didn’t know them well enough.

And the problem is this whole story had so much potential to be incredible. there is so much focus on girls saving the day. it is a true story of girl power. And I love that. I truly do. we don’t see many books with true girl power in them and even fewer with a group of girls working together to save the day. it was brilliant to see; I just wish that the rest of the story had lived up to the same potential.

All in all, this is a okay read. it isn’t ground breaking and I have read books that are far better, but I have also read books that are far worse. if you want a book with girl power, pick this up, if you want a book with complex and well developed fantasy world, don’t.
