How are we nearly at the end of September already?!? I honestly don’t know where this year has gone! Oh well, since we are somehow at yet another weekend it is time for another book review. and this week I am finished an incredible trilogy that I started earlier this year and that trilogy is the Illuminae Files by Amie Kauffman and Jay Kristoff. So, here is my review for Obsidio!
My god that was seriously intense! I will be 100% honest with you and admit that for the first, probably, 200 pages of this book, I wasn’t sure about it. but in the end I ended up reading this all in one sitting.
The reason why it took me a while to get into this book was because it didn’t have quite the same feel to it as the previous two books. It didn’t have the same, instant, high stakes drama. It was more of a slow burn. With the first two books it was constant high adrenaline drama, straight from the get go. But with this third book it wasn’t. The real drama took a while to get going. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it just wasn’t what I was expecting from this book. I was expecting it to just jump straight into it. once the drama did get going, it did really get going!
I will admit that this was probably the most predictable of all the books in the trilogy. although I wasn’t particularly surprised by that. for the most part there could only ever be two possible outcomes. There were only so many possible directions that this book could take. Thankfully a lot of the less major plot twists did take me surprise. There were several smaller turns that I didn’t see coming. Although a few of these turns did kind of feel like they were just happening for the sake of adding drama, but I still enjoyed them.
What I loved most about this book though was that we got to see all of our favourite characters again. I loved that we got to see so much more of Kady and Ezra, Hana and Nik and Ella. It was just nice that in this final instalment we got to see them all truly come together and unite. We got to see them working together. I will admit that I didn’t feel much of a connection to the new characters that we were introduced too, Asha and Rhys. I don’t know if it was because they didn’t get much screen time as this instalment was set over two different locations and following two different strings of the same story or if it is because I didn’t feel like they were key parts of the story, all in know is that I didn’t connect to them the same way that I connected to the others characters.
All in all, though I am very glad that I decided to give this series a go. I loved reading these book. they have become one of my all-time favourite series!
4.5 out of 5
