It is time for another book review! whoop, whoop! Today I am continuing with an incredible series that I love. And that book is Charmcaster, the third book in the Spellslinger series by Sebastien De Castell. Let’s do this!
This series really deserves a hell of a lot more recognition. It has somehow managed to fly under the radar which is awful since it is such a brilliant story. I love this series!
Charmcaster really moved the story forward. Its storylines where more complex than those of the previous two books and it really helped to set up the rest of the series. so much happened in this book. a lot of questions were answered and a lot more where asked. I am so curious to see what is going to happen in the second half of this series! so much has been revealed in this book and even more hinted at. I just know that the next book, Soulbinder, is going to be really intense. I cannot wait to see how all these events are going to play out.
I will admit that I did figure out a few of the plot twists before they happened. For instance, I had figured out who the Red Mage was pretty early on. I had also figured out some of the things that were revealed in the last part by about the half way point. Which was a little bit disappointing as, particularly with the first book, I hadn’t really figured out any plot twists in this series before. But I am not sure if this is a fault of the book itself or just because I have been reading a lot of fantasy recently and so have become really attuned to plot twists. Thankfully for the most part I was impressed by the story and the direction that it took. And also by some of the twists.
But I think was impressed me most in this book though is how much Kellen has developed as a character. He has grown up so much over the course of this series so far. When we first met him he was unsure and constantly relying on tricks and childish deceptions. Always leaning on other people. He was naive and always gave people more credit than they deserved. But as this story goes on he is changing so much. he is becoming smarter and stronger. He is slowly starting to gain confidence in his own abilities and standing on his own for the first time. He is growing into a brilliant character and I am cannot wait to see how else he changes.
All in all, I did really enjoy this book. I listened to it on Audio, which I haven’t don’t for this series before, but I think I will probably do for the rest of the series. The audiobook was very good. if you haven’t picked up this series all ready, you need to!
