Today it is time for another top reads post. And this time I thought that we should make it seasonal. So today I am going to be talking all about my favourite books that are set during the summer time or just generally themed around summer. Let’s do this!
When We Collided by Emery Lord
This book is a stunning young adult contemporary. It follows two main characters, Jonah and Vivi as they spend their summer falling in love with each other. Vivi whirls into town, this vibrant, bundle of energy and turns Jonahs life upside down. All is not as simple as it may seem though. Jonah is still grieving his father, dealing with his mother’s break down and trying to play parent to his three young siblings and Vivi has plenty of demons herself. This book is a lovely summer read. It is a beautiful story about love and loss, darkness and light. It is truly wonderful.
Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
This book is perfect for those of you that prefer more fantasy based books (this is my usual preference). Miss Peregrines is this beautiful story of a young boy, well teenager, discovering a whole new side of the world and finally finding himself. You follow Jacob as he uncovers the secrets of his grandfather’s childhood and finds himself in 1940’s Wales, surrounded by children with extraordinary talents. This book is wonderfully creative. It doesn’t quiet live up to its hype, at least not in my opinion, but it is enjoyable none the less.
We Were Liars by E Lockheart
Set on a private island, you follow Cadence as she slowly uncovers the events that scared her family. This young adult contemporary will break your heart. It grips you from page one, pulling you in. You will not be able to put it down. It is a truly stunning book with so many twists and turns it will leave you dizzy. This is one of my favourite reads of the year so far. If you are only going to read one book this summer, make it this one (although word of warning, do not read any reviews before reading it. Just trust me on that one).
Summer Days and Summer Nights by Various (Edited by Stephanie Perkins)
This isn’t a actually a novel, this book is a collection of 12 short stories, by 12 different authors. Some of the authors include, Cassandra Claire, Stephanie Perkins, Veronica Roth and Jenifer E Smith among others. All of these stories are summer romances and they are brilliant. You will fall in love over and over again. Each and every story is just incredible. If you don’t have a lot of time to read or just want something very easy, this is the book for you.
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson
This book is a very sweet young adult romance/contemporary It is by far the most easy going book I read this summer. You follow Andie as all of her well mapped out plans for the summer crumble, leaving her to pick up the pieces. What she never expected was to find her true calling in life and fall in love. The book is set during summer time and is just a lovely read. All the characters are very relatable and seem so genuine. The storylines are all very interesting They twist a lot and keep you interested I will warn you though that it took me quiet a while to into this book. It is quiet slow going at the start, but ultimately, you will be drawn into it. It is just a very sweet, summery romance.
Love And Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch
Set over the course of a few weeks, this book follows teenager, Lina, as she ventures to Italy to get to know her biological father after her mother’s death. This book is so much more then I was expecting. It is a book about finding yourself, falling in love and healing. I read this book in practically one sitting, I just could not put it down. It is sweet, funny and cute but also hard and heart-breaking. It is the perfect summer read.
The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord
In this lovely little book, you will follow 17-year-old Lucy over her summer as she works as a counsellor at Daybreak summer camp. A camp for troubled teens. Lucy has to learn how to handle trans teens, children who have lost a parent, the aftermath of abusive families, teen pregnancies and more, all while dealing with her own mother’s cancer. Throughout this book you watch Lucy struggle with life, question her religion and grow up. This is a wonderful, if heart-breaking book. I couldn’t put it down. If you want a book to just curl up with and lose yourself in, this is the one for you.
The Upside Of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli
This is hands down the best contemporary that I have read in ages. This story follows 17-year-old Molly over the course of one unforgettable summer. She is the girl who has had 26 crushes, but never done anything about it. this story follows her as she develops crush 27, makes new friends and generally starts to discover who she is. This is a beautiful story full of brilliant characters, and realistic storylines. I have never related to a story as much as I did this one. It is sweet and funny and so good. It is the perfect summer read.
And there we have it. all of these books are set over during summer and are brilliant. There is also Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson if you want an extra recommendation, I just personally didn’t love it enough to include on this list. what is your favourite summer themed read? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.
