Its Saturday and that means that it is time for another book review. And this week it is for a newly released book! Shock horror! Yep, today I am talking about Legendary by Stephanie Garber. Let’s do this.
Urgh, I don’t know how I feel about this book. I absolutely adored Caraval. I read it right after it came out last year and read the whole thing in two sittings, loved second of it and have been eagerly awaiting its sequel ever since. And now I have it and have read it and I am not sure how I feel about it.
It took me a very long time to get into this book. I’m not sure if it was just because it has been over a year since I read Caravel, because I have read a lot of fantasy in the last year or if it was just this book, but I really struggled to get into it. I must have been over halfway through it before I started to actually get into it. there was just something about it that I didn’t quiet click with. I think some of the issue may be that I found this book a bit predictable. I figured out most of the big plot twists really early on. I also don’t think that it helped that I was 80% sure I knew who Legend was going into this book (I figured it out while reading Caraval and I was correct). This meant that the main mystery of this book failed to hold my attention.
But that being said, it was still a good book. once I managed to get into it I did enjoy it. and there were some twists and turns that I didn’t expect. I think what I liked most about this book was that we got to see another side to Tella and got to know her a bit better. I really disliked her character in the first book. I found her to be shallow and dim and manipulative and, honestly, a bit of a player. But she really grew on me in this book. you got to see her true intelligence and understand her motives. But most importantly you got to truly understand what Scarlet means to her and how she views their relationship. I still don’t love her as a character, but I don’t hate her anymore.
All in all, this book was enjoyable just a bit predictable. It definitely felt like it suffered a bit from second book syndrome. I am interested to read the final book in this trilogy though and see where Garber takes that story.
