Hey Guys!
Today I wanted to talk about something that I don’t really talk about and that is DNF’d books. I am not someone who DNF’s very often. I usually force myself to finish a book, even if I hate it, just so that I can say that I gave it a fair chance. So on the rare occasion that I do DNF a book, there is good reason for it. so today I thought that I would share with you the few books that I have DNF’d over the years and the reasons why.
Quick disclaimer, these are my personal opinion. If a book that you love is on this list, then you are perfectly entitled to love that book, just as I am perfectly entitled not to. I am not trying to offend anyone.
Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oakes
I made it about two thirds of the way through this one before giving up on it. I had really wanted to love it and I did really like the first few chapters. But the more I read, the less I liked it. I just could not stand Dinah as a character, I found her to be incredibly self-centred and stupid, annoying and whinny and just so unbelievably unlikable. I disliked her so much that I could not stand the prospect of reading about her anymore, so I ended up DNFing Queen Of Hearts.
The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell
This is actually my most recently DNF. I started this book just after Christmas and gave up on it in February. I had been reading it for over a month and had only managed to get to the 100-page mark. I don’t know what it was about this book that I didn’t get on with, but there was something. I just could not read anymore. Forcing myself to keep reading it was starting to put me into a slump and so I admitted defeat and DNF’d.
Where She Went by Gayle Forman
This book was just unneeded. If you don’t know, this is the sequel to If I Stay and I hate it. I loved If I Stay, to the extent that as soon as I finished it, I ordered Where She Went because I wanted more of the characters, but this sequel actually made me like the first book less. This was just unnecessary and unneeded. To me at least it held no real story, it just felt like it was trying to cash in on If I Stay’s success. I got about halfway through and was bored to tears so I gave up with it and promptly got rid of the book.
Shoot To Kill by Steve Cole
Okay, this one is complicated. This is the sixth book in the Young Bond series. The first five book where written by Charlie Higson and I love them. He finished at book five and then Steve Cole decided to continue the story a few years later with Shoot To Kill. And I hate it. it wasn’t that the story was bad, it was alright, not as good as its predecessors, but alright. The main issue with Shoot To Kill was that it seemed like Cole was trying to write in Higson’s style and failing. It didn’t work for him. personally I think that he should have just gone into it fresh and it may have been better. I got about two thirds of the way through and I was bored to tears. Nothing had happened, the writing felt disjointed and I had had enough.
Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr
For this one I was just too late. I didn’t read this one until 2015 and it was just too late. If I had read this one when it had first come out I think that I would have enjoyed it. It is very much a product of the Twilight, Wolves Of Mercy Falls, Paranormalcy era. It had that feel to it. and I just couldn’t connect to it because of that. I didn’t find the story original, it was predictable and I just didn’t enjoy it. I made it about 250 pages into this one before quitting. I just could not force myself to read any more of it.
Loch Ness (Cryptid Files) by Jean Flitcroft
Basically, this is just crap. No other way around it. it just is not a good book. I only got about a quarter of the way through this one before thinking fuck this shit and stopping. I just couldn’t.
