It is time for another book review and today I am working my way through my summer TBR. Yep, todays book is Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson. Let’s do this!
Well that wasn’t what I was expecting. This book somehow managed to be light and fluffy while also trying to deal with a very hard topic and I am not sure how I feel about it.
I feel like this book was a bit too light. There was a very heavy topic at its centre but I don’t feel like it was given the attention that it deserved. This book was basically just a fluffy romance with this big bad thing thrown into it to add some complexity. And I personally didn’t think that it worked. Even right at the end there wasn’t enough focus on her Dad and on his storyline. it felt like it was only present in the story when it was physically adding to Taylor’s character arc. And that was disappointing. There was a lot of potential there that just wasn’t quiet reached.
I also found that there was a lot of forced, over the top drama in this book. the whole ‘five summers ago’ thing was just incredible tedious and not necessary. Matson was trying to make drama where there was none and it didn’t work. It just bugged me. I was hoping that there was going to be this really big secret revelled about what happened that summer but I had a feeling that it would be something trivial and it was even more disappointing then I was expecting. This is another situation where Matson just fell short a bit. She was making drama for the sake of drama. And it just was not needed. Plus, I found this story to be very predictable. You just knew what was going to happen in each storyline. there were no surprises.
But, I will say this. I did find myself smiling at this book. if I ignored the unnecessary drama and the bad handling of illness, it was quiet a sweet read there where several times when I found myself smiling. Just some of the little moments in this book where really funny and there were some heart-warming moments. For instance, the whole Warren/Murphy thing made me laugh so much. it was just so damn awkward and adorable but also cringy. I just couldn’t help but grin at it.
Overall, this book was a bit ‘meh’. I don’t really have any strong opinions about it and I am really struggling to see why everyone loves Morgan Matson so much. this is the second book of hers that I have read and the second book that has left me disappointed.
