It’s book review time! And, shock horror, todays book is a new release! Like, released this week, new release! I’m not sure that this has ever happened before! Achievement unlocked!…..anyway, in case you haven’t figured it out already, todays book is, of course, A Court Of Frost And Starlight by Sarah J Maas. Let’s do this!
I will be completely honest with you and admit that although this was one of my most highly anticipated releases of 2018, I was really worried about it. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it. I absolutely love the A Court Of Thorns And Roses trilogy but I am honestly not sure if it needs to be expanded on. I am so scared that it will end up being ruined. But, Frost And Starlight has definitely given me hope for the future of this series. I really enjoyed it.
It really helped to tie up the few lose ends that where left over at the end of Wings And Ruin and it did start to move the story forward, towards whatever direction it is going to go in next. I was impressed by how much was jammed into this little novella but at the same time I was pleased that Maas didn’t try to make it longer. There was just the right amount of story.
I will admit that it was a lot fluffier then I was expecting it to be. It was a very character driven story and was primarily focused on the character’s recovery and Fayre and Rhys’ relationship. I’m not saying that this was a bad thing, not at all, it was just different. especially when compared to the main trilogy. I think it is just because there was no action and drama in it that made it feel different. it wasn’t what we are used to when stepping into this world.
But I did really like that things weren’t perfect for the characters. I really liked seeing that they have all been affected by the events in Wings And Ruin. It was refreshing to see characters actually reacting to things and struggling with them. a lot of times in books, particularly YA books, the aftermath and trauma is just kind of brushed over and not really talked about. I like the fact that we actually got to see how each individual character is coping with things and learning to live with the past. I also liked that they still found happiness and solstice with one another. The inner circle. The night court family. I found myself smiling at them so many times.
All in all, I did enjoy this little book. I am still apprehensive about where this series is going to go but I am definitely more interested in it now. One thing I will say about A Court Of Frost And Starlight though is that it was released at the wrong time. Why they decided to release a book set at the winter solstice, that contains what is essentially Christmas in May I do not know. It would have been so much better if it was realised in October or November. At least that would make sense…
