Book Review: Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Hey Guys!

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope that you are all having a lovely day. Since it is Sunday I have another book review for you lovely people. Today it is all about Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Let’s do this!

Generally speaking, I don’t read sci-fi. It isn’t a genre that I find myself reaching for. It is very rare that a sci-fi book piques my interested. But Illuminae is one of the rare books that has. I have been hearing people rave out it for so long that I finally just thought ‘fuck it! what have I got to lose’ and I picked it up. and oh my shitting god! I am so glad that I decided to give this book a go. I freaking loved it.

I did something that I have never done before with this book, I listened to the audiobook while reading along with the physical book. I had heard so many people recommend the audiobook but I didn’t want to miss out of the unique way that this story is told and not experience the graphics, so I did both. And for me this was the best decision that I could have made. The audiobook is incredible. it really did feel like I was listening to a movie. If you are going to read this book, I highly recommend doing it this way. I don’t think that I would have enjoyed this book quiet as much if I had just been reading it.

Also, the story is incredible. it is told in such a different format to anything that I have read before and I will admit, I was worried that I wouldn’t connect to the story or the characters because of it. but in reality it didn’t hinder my connection at all. I was so invested in this story. I physically couldn’t stop reading it. when I wasn’t able to read it (when at work) I found myself constantly thinking about and I had such a deep need to go and carry on reading it. it has been a long time since a book has hooked me that drastically. There was just so much going on. So many stories weaving together to form one. it was just so complex and completely gripping. I needed to know what was happening. And because the main events in the story are all set over just 3 or 4 days, you really feel the urgency of the story. it feels like if you don’t read it know, then you are going to run out of time. And I really loved that. it really helped to keep my attention.

I also completely fell in love with the characters. I adore Kady. She is just so amazing. I love that with her, you get it all. Yes, she is a genius! A master hacker and tech guru. But she is also caring and sweet, funny and brave and sarcastic as hell. You cannot help but fall a little bit in love with her. she went through so much in this book and grew so much as a person. no matter what happened, she always kept fighting. Kept moving forward, even when it killed her to do it. There where so many times when I just wanted to hug her and tell her everything will be okay.

I will admit that the story did drag at one point. At around the half way point the story lost momentum for a bit. I think because so much had happened up to that point and then so much happened after it, there was just a natural lull in the story but because of how fast paced and action packed everything else had been up to that point, that little lull really dragged. It felt way longer than it actually was. Also, although most of the story kept me on the edge of my seat, guessing what was going to happen next, some elements of it where predictable. The whole Ezra storyline for instance, the twist right at the very end, basically everything that we learnt in the last convo. But for the most part, I didn’t mind.

All in all, I freaking loved this book. it was so damn good. I will 100% be continuing with this trilogy. It is incredible. I can definitely see what all the hype is about with this series.

And there we have it. that was my, surprisingly long, review for Illuminae. Have you read this one yet? Did you love it? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.
