Book Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Hey Guys!

It it time for yet another books review! whoop, whoop! And this week I am starting a new series. Yep, today it is all about Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. Let do this shit!

This book has been on my TBR pile for about 3 or 4 years now and I have never gotten around to picking it up. but with the recent release of the forth book in the series, Restore Me, I thought that it was about time that I finally gave this series a go. And I am so glad that I did! I can definitely see what all fuss is about.

This book was fantastic. I couldn’t put it down. I read the whole thing in just two sittings. That does not happen all that often. Considering that this was Mafi’s debut novel, it is brilliant. This is such a complex story and an even more complex world. There is so much going on, and we only know such a small part of it. And most of what we do now was completely flipped on its head in the last 50 pages, so I’m not actually sure what I do know. It is such a surprise to find such a complex world in a debut novel.

There was just so much going on in this story. I will admit that elements of it where a little bit predictable, but for the most part it really kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t know what was going to happen next. And things kept being flipped on their heads. Ever couple of chapters what we believed was challenged and completely changed. I never knew who to trust, who to hate, who to want to shoot. It was brilliant. Even now, when I have finished it, I’m still not sure that I can trust anyone. I definitely do not trust Kenji! There is some seriously shady shit going on in this world!

I was honestly so invested in this story. I found myself really, really rooting for Juliette. I just wanted her to get out, to be safe, to be happy. And that honestly doesn’t happen all that often for me in first in series. It tends to take me a long time to warm up to characters. but not her. I just felt so sorry for her. she had been so mistreated for so long. So unloved and neglected. i just couldn’t help but feel sorry for her, to want better for her. i just wanted to help her. But at the same time I was so intrigued by her! What the fuck is she?! Why can she do these things?! I need to know, damnit!!!

I will just say this though; I was a bit uncomfortable with some of the actions of characters towards Juliette. Particularly Warner’s. His sheer obsession and complete disregard of her personal space and basic rights, it was just a lot. I know that that is the point, but some of it made me really uncomfortable. Particularly when he was touching her without her permission and being, generally, a bit perverted towards her. It just made me uncomfortable and it felt a bit too much. I don’t think quiet as much focus was needed on it.

But overall I did really, really, really, enjoy this book. There is clearly so much going on in this world. So much more then I can possibly imagine. I am so interested to see where this story is going to go in the rest of the series. I honestly cannot see myself waiting long to pick up Unravel Me.
