Book Review: The Elite by Kiera Cass

It is time for another book review. Today I am continuing with a series that I started last month and unexpectedly fell in love with. So, without further ado, here is my review for The Elite by Kiera Cass. Let’s do this.

I’m not sure how I feel about this book. I really enjoyed The Selection, despite its flaws, and I was expecting to feel the same way about The Elite. But I didn’t.

I found this book to be a bit tedious and tiresome. Mainly due to the fact that America really started to irritate me in this book. In the first book I found her to be a really brave, strong, independent young woman. Yes, she was a bit naive and impulsive, but I liked that about her. In this book however she felt like a completely different person. She stopped being America and seemed to just become another simpering girl trying to win the princes favour. And it just wasn’t her. she made a lot of really stupid decisions in this book. In the first book she was really smart and caring and thought things through, but in this one she just completely flipped. I just really didn’t like her in this book. She really got on my nerves. I also wasn’t a big Maxon. Again he seemed to have a complete character flip. He completely changed in this book.

Some of the storylines also felt a tiresome. I still really like the political side to these books and I did really enjoy some of the storylines, some, not so much. I can’t quiet put a finger on what I didn’t like about this book. I really enjoyed the first 100 pages or so, but as it went on, I liked it less and less. The storylines all just started to feel a bit overplayed and at times it also felt like nothing was happening at all. Most of the scenes in the woman’s room for instance felt very drawn out. I don’t think that there needed to be so many and of such length, considering nothing ever really happened during them.

I am also not a massive fan of the whole Aspen storyline. I’m sorry, but when it comes down to it, he brought this all upon himself. If I was America, I would have told him to go f*ck himself a long time ago. I really don’t care for him. and I feel like this storyline is, again, just making America seem really stupid and reckless. She has seen what will happen to her if their relationship is found out, and yet she doesn’t change. I find it infuriating.

I am really hoping that this book was just suffering from second book syndrome and that The One will feel more like the first book. Fingers crossed.
