Happy Saturday! Today it is time for another book review and this time it is for a classic. I know, shock horror! The classic in question is The Legend Of Spooky Hollow by Washington Irving. Let’s do this!
I actually had not intended to read this at the moment. I had planned to save it for next Halloween, but somehow ended up just sitting listening to the audiobook the other day, and I am actually glad that I didn’t save it for next Halloween as I didn’t really find it even a little bit creepy.
I knew that this was a very short book (only around 150 pages) so I was expecting it maybe be lacking in depth and complexity, and to focus mainly on the storyline, when in reality there was a hell of a lot of back story and description in this book and not a lot of actual story. I felt like the whole actual storyline was crammed into the last 20 pages, while the rest of the book just set the scene. And this kind of disappointing as I was expecting this to be a creepy tale that would spook me or at least unnerve me a little. But no.
Because the actual story felt so short it lacked and emphasis. It was just a bit flat and rushed. Which really was a shame. I have been left kind of thinking that if Irving had written slightly more, made the book longer, it would have been better. The story would have held my attention a bit more and would have had more feeling to it.
All that being said, I did like the general writing though. considering this was originally published in 1820, it has aged well. It isn’t hard work to read or to understand what is going on like some classics. And it flowed well. I listened to a Librivox recording of the book and it felt almost like poetry. The story had a very natural flow to it which I liked. It made it really interesting to listen too.
All in all, there where bits of this one that I liked and bits that I didn’t. I am glad that I listened to it though.
