Halloween is nearly upon us and so it is time for my final spooky books review!!! Mwah ha ha……yeah there was no way to actually infuse tension into that, but I tried lol. Anyway, my finally Halloween read this year was Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake. Let’s do this!
Firstly, I did not find this particularly scary. I enjoyed it and liked the story, but I did not find it scary. I don’t know if it is because I have read a lot of books with similar vibes to this one or because I figured out on of the major plot twists super early, I don’t know. I just didn’t find it scary. but, as I said, I did really enjoy it.
I read this in pretty much one sitting. It was good. I liked the storyline. I particularly liked the witchy element to the story. I was not expecting it, but I am really glad that it was there. It added a whole new layer to the story and made it a lot more interesting. But I do think if it hadn’t been there, and this had been more of a straight up ghost story, it would have been scarier. There was only one moment while reading this that I was truly creeped out and that was when the thing that happens towards the end, with the place, happened (sorry, trying to avoid spoilers). Apart from that I found it to be a pretty standard YA. Most the parts that could have been scary I just found myself thinking ‘that’s very violent’ or ‘well, that’s just unnecessary’.
Although I didn’t find it scary as I was expecting that I would, I did enjoy it. I will admit that when I started it I didn’t feel like I was making any progress on it. it was one of those situations when you have been reading for like 20 minutes, but it feels like 2 hours. It took me about 100 pages to get over that and get into the story. But I once I was into it, I was hooked. I just wanted to keep reading and see where the story was going to lead.
I think the reason why I liked this story is because of the characters. I like that they all had their role and they all felt real. everyone had their own personalities and traits and each person had their place in the group and their own role to play. I also really liked the dynamic of the group. I liked how this band of opposites, who shouldn’t fit together, did. They are meshed together perfectly and they worked as a collective. I really liked this element
Overall, I am bit disappointed that I didn’t find this scarier, but I did still enjoy it. it is a good YA book. I don’t know if I will bother reading the squeal. I don’t think it is needed. I liked the way that this one ended.
4 out of 5
And there we go. That is the end of the spooky reviews. Shame I didn’t find this one scary. I think next year I need to pick better books for Halloween. I mean, expect for Say Her Name by Juno Dawson, none of these really affected me. Oh well. Have you read Anna Dressed In Blood? What did you think about it? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.
