Book Review: Shadow And Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Hey Guys!

Happy Sunday! I hope that you are all having a nice day. As you are reading this I am on my way to Longleat for the day, so I am very happy J. Anyway, it is time for a book reivew. Today I am starting a new trilogy. That’s right, today is all about Shadow And Bone by Leigh Bardugo.

I whizzed through this book. I read it in basically one sitting. But dispite how quickly I got through this, I will admit that I am a little bit conflicted over it. generally speaking I liked it. I really liked it. I think that for a debut novel, it is very good. The world is really intresting and I am dvery curious about it and I want to know more. I also really liked the storyline. Again it is very intruiging. I am really interested to see where the story is going to go. All good. My issue with the book is that I feel like it needed to be longer.

Considering that this book is only 300 pages, Bardugo squeezed a hell of a lot into it. this meant that the story felt a bit rushed and, in places, underdeveloped. I think if the book had been a bit longer, 400 pages maybe, it would have aloud the story to be that bit more fleshed out and have a slightly flow to it. don’t get me wrong, I did still really enjoy it and I am really looking forward to continuing the trilogy, I just feel like it could have a been, more. where I really like it, I could have really loved it.

All that being said I did enjoy it. as I said, I am fascinated by the world. It seems really intesting and complex. Bardugo clearly has a wonderful imjeonation. And the storyline was very good. It kept me gripped right the way through, and I am really really intrested to see what direction it is going to take. I did also like the characters. I really like Alina and Mal. I think that they are both really good, solid, characters and I also think that they are very sweet together. I am also very intrigued by the Darkling. My feeling towards him changed a lot throughout this book, but I find him really interesting and I want to know more about him. i feel the same with some of the secondary characters like Genya, Ivan and others. I would really like to learn some of their backstories.

Overall, I did enjoy this book. I am glad that I have read it and I will be continuing with the trilogy. It wasn’t the best that I have ever read, but I did really like it. i can see why so many people love this universe.

  1. Hey, I’ve actually read/reviewed this one. I didn’t care enough about the characters to continue the series. However I’ve heard the new characters introduced in the second book are better, hmmm…Ooh the Darkling was intriguing, more interesting than the other characters, also so much time was spent on his and Alina’s relationship that you couldn’t help be pulled into his mystery. I thought it started off promising, but fizzled. You are right, some underdevelopment hurt.

    1. Yea, I’ve heard that the trilogy gets better as it goes on as well, that’s the main reason why I have decided to continue it. I can definitely see why lots of people don’t read past this book though. Although it is an interesting story, the characters are so underdeveloped in this first book that you don’t really connect to them. Which is a shame because what we did get of them, I liked, I just don’t really care about them at the moment. I really didn’t give a damn if they lived or died.
I will definitely be checking out your review. I’m really interested to see what other people are saying about this book x
