Book Review: Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo

Hey Guys!

It’s book review time! This week it is the turn of a book from my childhood that I have just reread for the first time and that book is Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. So, let’s do this.

I first read this book when I was about 10 years old. I read it in English class and I’m not sure if we ever completely finished it, but I love it. it has stuck with me over all of these years (although I didn’t find out what it was called until last year) and I have regularly found myself thinking about it. I adored this book and I have been wanting to reread it now for about 3 or 4 years. Unfortunately, it was out of print, it has only recently gone back into print which makes me really happy.

As soon as I started reading this book it all came flooding back to me. It is a such a beautiful story. I read it in just a couple of hours, it just instantly grips you. It is just this really stunning story of survival and friendship and beating the odds. And I love it. the storyline is something that you have seen hundreds of times before in books and film, but it is done so differently. It is a brilliant spin on it and it really keeps you gripped to the story. You want to see how it is all going to play out.

this is one of those books where you end up really rooting for the characters. You want them to survive, to flourish, to be happy. You Michael to find his family, to learn to survive and to have the chance to grow. But you also don’t want him to ever leave Kensuke. I just ended up really rooting for these characters. I connected to them on so many levels and I just ended up wanting to see them get what they want.

I personally find this book, particularly the ending, to be a bitter sweet. You can only have one outcome that you want, not both. You know you are either going to see Michael reunited with family or you are going to see him stay with Kensuke. there is no other option. And this leads to the ending of this book making you cry because you know Michael is going to have to choose, and it is hard to watch. And I think that this is perfect for a middle grade story. It teaches kids that you cannot always have everything you want, sometimes things are not in your control. I think that is a very important lesson.

I honestly love this story so much. I actually loved it as much the second time around, a decade on from my first time reading it, as I did the first time I read it. it is a truly timeless story that everyone should read. I am so happy to have finally reread it.

star 4.54.5 out of 5

It was so nice to go back and relive this little piece of my childhood. This isn’t something that I do very often so it was very nice. Did you read this as a child? Did you enjoy it? what books did you love as a kid? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.
